Real Ghost Stories and Paranormal Encounters

Firsthand accounts submitted by readers of GhastlyPages — hauntings, apparitions, footsteps in empty rooms and the everyday scary ghost experiences ordinary people cannot explain. Not fiction. Not folklore. Just what they saw.

About these accounts

Every story on this page was sent in by a reader who says the experience happened to them. Names have been shortened, locations kept broad, and identifying details left out. We haven't verified the encounters and we don't claim to — we've simply published them in the submitter's own words. Read them the way you would listen to a friend telling you about the night they couldn't explain what they saw.

If something similar has happened to you, you can share it at the bottom of this page.

The Encounters

The Woman at the Foot of the Bed

Yorkshire, England · 2018

The Woman at the Foot of the Bed

I woke up around 3 a.m. and there was a woman standing at the end of my bed. Grey dress, hair pulled back, hands folded in front of her. She wasn't threatening. She just looked at me like she was waiting for me to notice her. I closed my eyes and told myself I was dreaming. When I opened them again she was still there. She didn't move for what felt like a full minute. Then she was gone. I've slept with a lamp on ever since. My mother later told me the house had belonged to a widow who died there in the 1950s.

The Footsteps in the Basement

Ohio, United States · 2021

The Footsteps in the Basement

We rented a house that was cheap for the neighbourhood. The first week I heard footsteps in the basement while my husband was at work. Slow, heavy, walking the length of the room and back. I called the landlord and he asked, very quickly, if I'd heard anything else. When I said no, he sounded relieved. We moved out three months later, after the footsteps started coming up the stairs.

The Child in the Hallway

New South Wales, Australia · 2016

The Child in the Hallway

My daughter was two years old at the time. She started talking about 'the boy' in the hallway — describing him in detail, what he wore, that he was sad. We assumed imaginary friend. Then I saw him. Just for a second, standing outside her bedroom door at night. Same clothes she'd described. I didn't sleep that night. We had the house blessed. She stopped mentioning him after that. I've never told her I saw him too.

The Hospital Corridor

Karachi, Pakistan · 2019

The Hospital Corridor

Everyone on nights has a story from Ward 4. Mine is a man in a grey shalwar kameez walking the corridor at 2:40 a.m. I said salaam out of habit. He nodded and walked into the last room. That room had been closed for two weeks after a patient died in it. When I checked the CCTV the next morning, nobody had walked down that corridor at 2:40. Just me, standing there, saying salaam to no one.

The Voice on the Baby Monitor

Ontario, Canada · 2020

The Voice on the Baby Monitor

The monitor picked up a woman's voice singing to my son. Soft, in a language I didn't recognise. I ran to his room and he was fast asleep, smiling. The monitor was still on when I got there — no interference, no crossed signal, we checked. It happened four more times over three months, always the same voice, always around 4 a.m. My grandmother, when I described the melody, said her mother used to sing it to her in Polish.

The Figure on the Road

Scottish Highlands · 2015

The Figure on the Road

Two in the morning, single-track road, nobody around for miles. A man in a dark coat stepped out into my headlights. I hit the brakes so hard the load shifted in the trailer. When I got out to check, there was nothing. No body, no blood, no marks on the road. I sat in the cab for twenty minutes shaking. A local at the petrol station told me the next morning that a hiker had died on that stretch in the eighties. He said it happens to drivers about once a year.

The Apartment That Remembered

Warsaw, Poland · 2022

The Apartment That Remembered

My studio apartment had a routine that wasn't mine. The kitchen tap would run for exactly three seconds every evening around seven. A drawer in the bedroom would open by itself every morning. Never anything violent — just habits, like someone still lived there and I was the guest. I moved out after a neighbour mentioned the previous tenant, an elderly woman, had lived alone in that flat for forty years before she passed. Every quirk lined up with what her family said she used to do.

The Photograph

Cornwall, England · 2013

The Photograph

My mother's funeral. I took a photo of the empty church before people arrived, because she'd designed the flowers herself. When I looked at the picture later, there was a figure in the back pew. Not blurry, not a trick of the light — a clear woman in a dark coat, sitting in the exact seat my mother had booked for herself years earlier at a wedding, joking she'd 'sit at the back and watch.' Nobody had been in the church when I took the photo. I still have the picture. I don't show it to people anymore.

Frequently asked

Are these real ghost stories true?

Every account on this page was submitted by readers who say the experience happened to them. GhastlyPages does not claim to have verified any of the stories independently — we ask submitters to describe what they saw, heard or felt in their own words, with the date and location. Treat them the way you would treat any first-person paranormal account: as one person's honest report of something they cannot explain, not as scientific evidence of ghosts.

What is the scariest real ghost experience?

Reader submissions consistently rank three types of experience as the most frightening: a figure standing at the foot of the bed at night, footsteps coming from an empty room or floor, and a familiar voice heard through a baby monitor or phone when nobody is speaking. What these share is intimacy — the encounter happens inside a space the witness thought was safe, and the presence is calm rather than aggressive, which readers describe as the most disturbing element of all.

Why do people see ghosts more often at 3 a.m.?

Most reported paranormal encounters cluster between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m., a window sometimes called the "witching hour." Sleep researchers point to a natural spike in REM activity, sleep paralysis and hypnopompic hallucinations during this period — the brain is uniquely primed to perceive figures and sounds that are not there. Believers argue the same window is when the veil between worlds is thinnest. Both explanations agree on one thing: your senses are unusually vulnerable at 3 a.m., whatever the cause.

Can I submit my own paranormal encounter?

Yes. GhastlyPages accepts reader-submitted true ghost stories and paranormal encounters through the submission page. We ask for a title, the location, roughly when it happened, and the account in your own words. Anonymous submissions are welcome — most published accounts on this page use only a first name and age. Nothing is published without your consent, and we never publish full names or exact addresses.
